  • North American Theatre Online
    Your theatre research should begin here! This database contains 40,000 pages of major reference materials, together with records to approximately 30,000 plays, 57,000 people, 5,400 theatres, 22,000 productions, and 2,500 production companies.
  • Twentieth Century North American Drama
    1,905 plays by 419 playwrights, together with detailed, fielded information on related productions, theaters, production companies, and more. The database also includes selected playbills, production photographs and other ephemera related to the plays.
  • For information on Women, Native American, Latino and Black playwrights look under Theatre History Tab
  • Project Muse
    Project Muse is a resource for theatre history. It is a small database. Remember, when you search Muse, select article search, and choose Film, Theater and Performing Arts and your discipline choice!
  • MLA International Bibliography
    Search here for scholarly theatre criticism. You might want to consider searching by the name of your play, a character in your play, etc.
  • ProQuest Newspapers
    Proquest Newspapers is an excellent source to track down reviews of plays that opened in cities other than New York.

    This is an excellent starting point for anyone researching women directors. It also includes a very useful bibliography on women directors.

    • IBDB: Internet Broadway Database
      The IBDB provides records of productions from the beginnings of New York theatre in the 1700's up to today. Details include pertinent people involved as well as interesting facts and production statistics.
    • The Art Of Ancient Greek Theater
      This website uses artifacts from the Getty's collection to interpret Greek Theater from primary sources. It includes vase paintings, papyrus texts of surviving plays and contemporary recordings of ancient Greek.
